Hoe komt een potje pindakaas eigenlijk op het schap van jouw lokale Albert Heijn terecht? Zet die vraag je meteen aan het denken over distributiecentra, vrachtwagens en bezorgroutes? Kun je je al voorstellen hoe planning, algoritmes en optimalisaties ervoor zorgen dat dit proces efficiënt en duurzaam verloopt?

Wil jij voor je scriptie of afstudeerproject zelfstandig onderzoek doen naar forecasting binnen een van de grootste supply chains van Nederland? In ons forecasting team krijg je de ruimte om een afgebakende onderzoeksvraag uit te werken en je resultaten in de praktijk te toetsen. Dit is een afstudeeronderzoek en geen meewerkstage.

Samen kiezen we aan het begin van de stage een onderzoeksvraag die aansluit bij jouw opleiding en onze praktijk. Daarna neem jij de regie over je onderzoeksplan, literatuuronderzoek, experimenten en conclusies. Mogelijke onderzoeksthema's zijn:

• Onzekerheidskwantificatie met conformal prediction: naast puntvoorspellingen betrouwbare voorspellingsintervallen ontwikkelen, zodat onzekerheid kan worden meegenomen in beslissingen over bevoorrading.
• Hiërarchische forecast reconciliation: forecasts op verschillende niveaus, zoals product-, winkel- en product-dagniveau, consistent met elkaar maken met methodes zoals MinT en OLS, of door reconciliation weights te leren.
• Lokale effecten beter voorspellen: onderzoeken hoe onze modellen specifieke patronen en omstandigheden per winkel of regio beter kunnen herkennen.
• Machine Learning Engineering op schaal: efficiënte methodes ontwikkelen voor featureselectie en hyperparameteroptimalisatie van modellen die op grote schaal worden gebruikt.

Hiervoor kun je technieken uit Data Science, Machine Learning Engineering en Operations Research combineren. Deze onderwerpen zijn indicatief. We horen ook graag welk onderbouwd idee jij zelf hebt voor een relevant afstudeeronderzoek binnen forecasting. Je levert een scriptie of afstudeerverslag op, aangevuld met een werkend prototype en een advies voor toepassing in de praktijk.

Jouw nieuwe stage- en werkplek.
Je komt te werken in het Data Science - Operations team van Albert Heijn. Dit team maakt deel uit van de bredere Data Science & Analytics afdeling, waar meer dan 150 data professionals werken aan geavanceerde data-oplossingen om klantgedrag te begrijpen, klantrelevantie te verhogen en processen te optimaliseren. Samen met collega’s uit o.a. operations, replenishment en logistiek vertaal je data-inzichten naar concrete impact voor miljoenen klanten. Binnen het Data Science - Operations team werk je aan optimalisatie vraagstukken die onze supply chain en operatie efficiënt houden.

Tijdens deze stage werk je samen met data scientists, analysts, engineers en business stakeholders binnen Albert Heijn. Zij geven je toegang tot relevante kennis, data en bestaande modellen. Na een gerichte introductie werk je zelfstandig aan je onderzoek en zoek je proactief de juiste collega's op wanneer je input nodig hebt.

In deze functie werk je 32-40 uur per week, deels vanuit ons hoofdkantoor in Zaandam en deels vanuit huis. Je krijgt daarbij begeleiding van een van onze ervaren collega’s.

• Volg je een master in Operations Research, Toegepaste Wiskunde, Data Science of andere relevante studie op dit gebied.
• Je hebt aantoonbare ervaring met Python, statistische modellering en het zelfstandig uitvoeren van data-analyses of machine learning experimenten.
• Heb je sterke analytische en probleemoplossende vaardigheden, het vermogen om zelfstandig en in een team samen te werken en kun je helder communiceren om je ideeën duidelijk te presenteren.

How does a jar of peanut butter actually end up on the shelf of your local Albert Heijn? Does this question immediately get you thinking about distribution centers, trucks, and delivery routes? Can you already imagine how planning, algorithms, and optimizations ensure this process runs efficiently and sustainably?

Would you like to conduct independent research on forecasting within one of the largest supply chains in the Netherlands for your thesis or graduation project? In our forecasting team, you will have the opportunity to develop a well-defined research question and test your results in practice. This is a graduation research project, not a work placement internship.

Together, at the beginning of the internship, we will choose a research question that aligns with your education and our practice. After that, you will take control of your research plan, literature review, experiments, and conclusions. Possible research themes include:

• Uncertainty quantification with conformal prediction: developing reliable prediction intervals in addition to point forecasts, so that uncertainty can be incorporated into supply decisions.
• Hierarchical forecast reconciliation: making forecasts at different levels, such as product, store, and product-day level, consistent with each other using methods like MinT and OLS, or by learning reconciliation weights.
• Better predicting local effects: investigating how our models can better recognize specific patterns and conditions per store or region.
• Machine Learning Engineering at scale: developing efficient methods for feature selection and hyperparameter optimization of models used on a large scale.

For this, you can combine techniques from Data Science, Machine Learning Engineering, and Operations Research. These topics are indicative. We would also like to hear what well-founded idea you have for a relevant graduation research project within forecasting. You will deliver a thesis or graduation report, supplemented with a working prototype and advice for practical application.

Your new internship and workplace.
You will work in the Data Science - Operations team at Albert Heijn. This team is part of the broader Data Science & Analytics department, where more than 150 data professionals work on advanced data solutions to understand customer behavior, increase customer relevance, and optimize processes. Together with colleagues from operations, replenishment and logistics, you translate data insights into concrete impact for millions of customers. Within the Data Science - Operations team, you will work on optimization challenges that keep our supply chain and operations efficient.

During this internship, you will work together with data scientists, analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders within Albert Heijn. They will give you access to relevant knowledge, data, and existing models. After a focused introduction, you will work independently on your research and proactively seek out the right colleagues when you need input. In this role, you will work 32-40 hours per week, partly from our head office in Zaandam and partly from home. You will receive guidance from one of our experienced colleagues.
