Our Global Support Office (GSO) is based in Zaandam in the Netherlands, but GSO associates also work in all the countries we serve. This team supports all our great local brands in finance, HR, IT, legal, communications, sustainable retailing, and other key functions. . 

 

Sales Tax Manager

The Sales Tax Manager will be responsible for ensuring sales and use tax compliance with complex state and local sales tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions. This role involves managing audits and overseeing systems that impact indirect company purchases.  This role is expected to make significant contributions towards reducing expense from lower audit assessments and accurate compliance.  Additionally, this role will conduct a variety of tax planning and research tasks and will seeks ways to improve, automate, and streamline department procedures while maintaining strong controls over processes. 

 

This involves:

  • Manage sales and use tax audits including but not limited to reducing audit workpapers, negotiating settlements, and providing recommendations to reduce future audit exposure 
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and ensure company policies and business systems align with current regulations
  • Update management on the impacts of changing tax law and the related impacts to the company
  • Provide guidance on tax implications of indirect company purchases
  • Corresponds with and represent company to tax authorities including the resolution of tax notices
  • Review and approve monthly GL account reconciliations for assigned GL accounts and ensure that any variances are accurately identified, explained, and resolved per accounting policies
  • Prepare annual budget for sales/use tax accounts for assigned GL accounts
  • Ensure sales and use tax implication of corporate projects and initiatives are addressed and implemented
  • Regularly communicate status of projects to management
  • Supervise the preparation and filing of sales and use tax returns
  • Provide analysis and legal research of various tax matters and issue guidelines
  • Prepare and maintain procedures and process documentation for internal audit and SOX purposes
  • Any other duty or task as assigned by management

Your role is highly diverse and encompasses various responsibilities. Here are the key ones:

  • Strong multi-state knowledge of sales and use tax laws
  • Experience with sales tax engines including but not limited to Vertex and OneSource  
  • Self-motivated with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for working with internal teams and external tax authorities
  • Evaluate and improve processes and controls to optimize compliance efficiency
  • Strong knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft applications
  • Strong technical ability to research changing law and summarize impacts efficiently and professionally 
  • SOX controls / Risk & Controls
  • Ability to multi-task day to day activities, as well as projects
  • Develop partnerships with internal business partners
  • Must be able to embrace and adapt to change, set and achieve challenging goals, and be a team player

Requirements

We think you’ll be best geared for success if you meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Tax, or related field
  • 5+ years of sales and use tax experience
