Driving impact from behind the scenes

Madalina Mosescu

Sustainability Specialist

Mega Image

Madalina Mosescu originally studied tourism, drawn by a love of travel and working with people. She started her career in the tourism industry but quickly realized it didn’t give her the sense of purpose she was looking for. Things changed in 2021, when she joined Mega Image, Ahold Delhaize’s brand in Romania, as a Sustainability Specialist. “I’m finally doing the work I’ve always wanted to do and where I feel I belong.”

connecting people

Win-win I act as the link between our stores and the NGOs we partner with. Through our four hundred stores, Mega Image supports hospitals, schools, and a range of organizations by donating food for special events. Sometimes these are one-off events, but we also provide ongoing support. For example, food nearing its expiry date is collected daily from our stores and distributed within the community. It’s a win-win: we provide people in need with healthy food while also contributing to an important company objective – reducing food waste.

Finding real fulfillment Being around people has always been my biggest motivator. It influenced my choice of study and my early work as a travel consultant. Oddly enough, I never really felt the fulfillment I was looking for. In this role, however, it finally came together. I interact with people in ways that are genuinely fulfilling, and I feel I’m truly helping them.

Real life impact I wish I could attend all the events we support. Children’s Day, Christmas, Easter… it’s incredible to see the impact we have in real life. Most of the time, though, I work behind the scenes, coordinating logistics, budgets, and collaborating with different teams and partners to ensure every campaign or project runs smoothly. Recently, we supported an afternoon where children with disabilities learned to plant a vegetable garden. Many had no idea how vegetables grow. Seeing their reactions was amazing. I can’t always explain it, but what I do here touches something deep inside me.

feeling right at home

Love at first sight Like many Romanians, I only knew Mega Image as the place where I did my daily shopping. The idea that I would ever work here never crossed my mind. During my first interview, I met my colleague, Alice, who is still part of my team today. It was love at first sight. Thanks to her, I immediately felt at home at Mega Image. Of course, I had to get used to the processes and systems, but it’s the people who really make the difference. Everyone is so open and welcoming that you instantly feel comfortable. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed. We work hard, but we also make time to unwind together now and then.

Unconditional support Our team is small: Alice, me, and our manager. But in my role, I’m in almost constant contact with colleagues from other departments, including marketing, commercial, legal, and finance. What I love is that from day one, you’re encouraged to take initiative and share your ideas. You can ask anyone for advice, and people are genuinely ready to help each other. That sense of unconditional support – you know that people have each other’s backs and that you can trust one another – is amazing. To me, my manager is the perfect example of what a good manager should be. He is kind, approachable, and full of positive energy. He shows appreciation for my work while also giving constructive feedback when needed. One day, I hope to be the kind of manager he is.

Young @ Mega Two years ago, Young @ Mega was launched, a community for the younger associates at the company. As a board member, I make sure the needs and wants of our younger colleagues are heard, and that they – currently around four hundred members – can keep growing within the company. We do this by organizing workshops on topics they want to learn more about or arranging meetings with a VP so they can ask questions directly. It’s an incredibly important platform. When I was younger, working at other companies, I didn’t always feel heard or have someone to turn to.

The perfect day Some days, my to-do list doesn’t even fit on a single sheet of paper. There are so many things to manage across different projects – emails to send, food to collect, people to coordinate. It can get pretty stressful. No matter how much I want to, sometimes it’s just impossible to get everything done in one day. The best days are the ones where I actually manage to tick everything off my list.

ultimate stress relief

Mindfulness There are many ways I can disconnect from work, and I rarely have trouble doing so. It could be going for a walk, having a good conversation with my boyfriend, or going out for dinner with friends. Reading a book or going for a run works wonders too. I used to run a lot when I was studying, then I stopped for several years, and I’ve recently started again. Being outdoors always makes me feel good.

A picture paints a thousand words Painting is one of my biggest hobbies. I focus on landscapes; I’m not the kind of person who works from imagination. What I often do is watch someone on YouTube paint a natural landscape, and then I try to recreate it myself. Am I any good? I think so. None of the paintings are on our walls at home yet, but I plan to give one to my parents soon.

Overcoming my biggest fear I’ve been afraid of water for as long as I can remember.  For years, Gabriel, my boyfriend, has encouraged me to go into the water. A few years ago, I finally gave in. With incredible patience, Gabriel taught me to swim step by step. Even now, I still have to push past a little fear when I get in the water, but once I’m in, I love it and don’t want to get out. For me, that’s truly a lifetime achievement.

Surrounded by inspiration I love being surrounded by people who inspire me and from whom I can learn. For me, those two always go hand in hand. I try to see the positive qualities in people and learn from them. At work, that’s my colleagues and my manager; in my personal life, my parents are my biggest sources of inspiration. My father for his energy and positivity, and my mother for her willingness to help others. I try to take the best from everyone around me and hope to be someone who makes people laugh, is there when you need someone, and someone you can  trust completely.
