How you can
make a difference

.

Important: To process your application, we kindly ask you to submit a motivation letter together with your CV. Applications without a motivation letter will unfortunately not be considered in the selection process.

Your new internship and workplace.
As an Intern within the Transport Technology team, you will contribute directly to improving visibility into the complex data flows that power Albert Heijn’s logistics and transport operations. Together with colleagues from engineering and architecture teams, you will work on an innovative proof-of-concept focused on real-time visualization, monitoring, and observability of distributed systems.

Albert Heijn’s logistics and transport operations rely on a complex network of services and applications that exchange data continuously to ensure products move efficiently from suppliers to distribution centers, stores, and customers. Understanding dependencies between these systems and monitoring the health and performance of data flows can be challenging without the right tools.

During this internship, you will design and build an interactive visual map of the AH Transport Data Flow Chains. The goal is to provide real-time insights into service dependencies, data flow activity, throughput, lag, and system health to support operational excellence and rapid troubleshooting.

You will work on:

  • Visualizing data flows and dependencies between services and applications using APIs and Kafka topics.
  • Designing an interactive map that shows services, producers, consumers, throughput, lag, and health indicators.
  • Integrating with Kubernetes and Kafka configurations to automatically discover services and topics.
  • Visualizing metrics such as throughput, error rates, processing times, and API response times.
  • Implementing alerting functionality based on thresholds and trend deviations.
  • Building a functional prototype that demonstrates real-time monitoring and visualization capabilities.
  • Documenting architectural decisions, findings, limitations, and recommendations.

This internship gives you hands-on experience with cloud-native technologies, distributed systems, observability, and large-scale logistics operations in a real-world enterprise environment. You will have the opportunity to work with modern technologies such as Kubernetes, Kafka, and real-time metrics platforms while contributing directly to operational improvements.

In this role, you work 32-40 hours per week, partly from our head office in Zaandam and partly from home.

We find it important that you can be yourself at Albert Heijn in an environment that welcomes different perspectives, where we are curious and value each other. For this role, we especially welcome candidates who strengthen the diversity within our team in the broadest sense of the word. Someone who brings a different perspective through their background and personal qualities and complements our team.

What we offer you.

  • An interesting and versatile internship at the Albert Heijn head office for 5/6 months, starting in September 2026.
  • A challenging internship with real responsibilities and hands-on experience.
  • An internship allowance (€500 per four weeks) plus travel allowance.
  • Social events and networking opportunities with fellow interns at our head office.
  • An inclusive environment where you can continuously develop yourself both personally and professionally.

What you bring.
With our 125,000 colleagues, we fill more than seven million plates every evening. And if it is up to us, we will soon do that together with you as our new Intern. Especially if you bring analytical skills and creativity to Albert Heijn.

Also:

  • You are currently pursuing an HBO or WO degree, preferably in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • You have an affinity with distributed systems, data visualization, and cloud-native technologies.
  • You have basic knowledge of APIs, messaging systems such as Kafka, and container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.
  • Experience with monitoring, observability, dashboards, or real-time data processing is a strong plus.
  • If you combine a passion for technology with strong communication skills, even better!

Additionally, you are:

  • Someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges independently.
  • A proactive problem-solver who can think creatively and clearly document findings.
  • Structured enough to work within architectural guidelines while maintaining a clear overview of complex systems.

Together we make better food accessible. For everyone.
Every evening, Albert Heijn’s 125,000 colleagues — spread across more than 1,250 stores in the Netherlands and Belgium, nine home shopcenters, seven distribution centers, and our headquarters — help fill over seven million plates.  At Albert Heijn, we believe that food and drinks play an essential role in addressing society’s biggest challenges.
