How you can
make a difference

.

Are you ready to lead the future of data engineering at Albert Heijn? As Engineering Manager for our Data Platform domain, you’ll empower high-performing engineering teams to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable data platform services that drive data-driven innovation for millions of customers across Albert Heijn, Etos, and Gall & Gall.

This is how you will reinvent food retail.

  • You lead, coach, and develop approximately 20-25 SecDevOps Engineers (both internal and external) fostering a culture of ownership, engineering excellence, and accountability.
  • You are responsible for HR aspects within your team, including performance reviews, coaching, supporting development, and addressing performance issues.
  • You build empowered, autonomous, T‑shaped teams and actively remove non‑technical overhead to keep teams unblocked.
  • You ensure high-quality delivery of platform components and services with strong focus on resilience, maintainability, and operational excellence.
  • You embed security by design principles across all engineering practices and ensure compliance with internal and external security standards.
  • You drive engineering best practices in testing, CI/CD, observability, and automation, ensuring consistent quality across teams.
  • You collaborate closely with Product Owners to translate product goals into executable, outcome-focused delivery plans.
  • You align technical decisions across teams and ensure adherence to architectural and security guidelines.
  • You monitor platform performance, incident trends, and delivery metrics to continuously improve team effectiveness and platform stability.
  • You manage capacity, hiring, and skill development to sustain strong delivery capabilities over time.
  • You work closely with architecture, product, and security leaders to evolve the platform and ensure it remains robust and future-proof.

Your new team and office.
As Engineering Manager, you will join the Data Differentiation Platform (DDP) department, responsible for the Cloud, Data Platform, and Middleware & Scheduling services that support Albert Heijn, Etos, and Gall & Gall. Together with a peer Engineering Manager, you will lead eight engineering teams (around 50 SecDevOps Engineers) who develop and operate our data platform—the foundation for data-driven innovation across all our brands.

Our platform, built primarily on Azure and Databricks, provides secure, reliable, and scalable infrastructure, enabling teams to build and run data products efficiently. Your primary focus is to deliver high-quality, secure, and reliable platform capabilities, ensuring teams deliver predictably and continuously improve.

At Albert Heijn, you’ll work with inspiring peers in data, digital, and tech—a diverse community with a shared goal: making (online) shopping simpler and more inspiring. We invest heavily in technology and your career. Our teams work hybrid: from home and at our office next to Zaandam train station.

We value a high-belonging team where everyone feels safe, accepted, and appreciated. We especially welcome candidates who bring new perspectives and diversity to our team. Don’t check all the boxes? Neither do we 😉. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to see your application!

The recipe for maximum impact.

  • You have a significant track record as a hands-on Software or Data Engineer (Senior/Lead level).
  • Proven experience leading multiple software or platform engineering teams, in a cloud environment.
  • Experience with HR responsibilities, including conducting performance reviews, coaching, supporting employee development, and addressing performance issues.
  • Deep knowledge of software quality principles, including testing strategies, automation, and reliability engineering.
  • Practical experience implementing secure development and operations practices (e.g., IAM, network security, data protection, compliance).
  • Strong understanding of Azure, Databricks, and modern cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong organizational and delivery management skills. You ensure your teams deliver consistently and at high quality.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • A people-centered leadership style focused on growth, collaboration, and trust.

What we offer.
At Albert Heijn we aim to grow, and this is only possible if you grow along with us. As we work together to build our brand and your career, you can count on (based on 40 hours per week):

  • An annual salary up to 125k including holiday allowance and a flexible bonus. Depending on your level of seniority and experience;
  • A minimum of 20 days paid vacation, optionally 12.5 days extra. Do you want to take that extra time off, or would you rather convert the extra days into discounts or sell them for cash? You’re the end boss!;
  • Flexible working hours;
  • Access to a challenging training curriculum – AH Top Academy;
  • An excellent pension plan where we as an employer contribute 4,5 more than you as an employee;
  • A travel allowance or a NS-business card for traveling to and from Zaandam by train;
  • Attractive discounts on various insurance policies;
  • 10% staff discount on groceries in all Albert Heijn stores, to a maximum of €300 per year;
