Stage Health & Sustainability
Healthy Communities & Planet is one of our six strategic priorities and a central part of our culture and values within Ahold Delhaize. We have a clear purpose: inspiring everyone to eat and live better, for a healthier future for people and planet.
Our Group Health & Sustainability (H&S) team is passionate about driving systemic change and maximizing impact. The H&S team aims to achieve this by connecting brands, leveraging knowledge and embracing innovation.
Starting September 2025, within the Group H&S team we are looking for support with two internship positions.
Your new job and workplace.
As an intern in our team, you contribute directly to the exciting journey of delivering Ahold Delhaize’s H&S plans. You get the chance to explore topics and support experts on, for instance, climate, circularity (food waste and plastics), health & nutrition, nature and ESG at one of the world's largest food retail groups. Joining alongside many other interns within Ahold Delhaize and our brands in the Netherlands, you’ll be onboarding together with peers as part of your exciting learning journey. As an intern you will support various activities such as:
- Keeping track of and sharing best practices, across our brands. For example, helping an expert in the H&S team with making compelling overviews of initiatives that reduce food waste, plastic packaging or emissions, which could be scaled from one brand to another.
- Conducting relevant practical desk research. For example, analyzing peers in our industry on sustainability targets, initiatives and performance.
- Collecting relevant input for ESG ratings and benchmarks and analyzing improvement potential.
- Internal engagement, awareness and capability building initiatives. For example, supporting associate learning initiatives related to health & sustainability.
For this position your work availability is 32-40 hours per week. We work in a hybrid way, with a strong preference for at least two days per week working from our head office in Zaandam.
This is an internship where you will be working as part of the team, it is not a research internship that can be combined with, for example, in-house thesis research. We think it is important that you at Ahold Delhaize can be yourself in an environment that is open to different perspectives, an environment in which we are curious and appreciate each other.
What you will learn as an H&S intern within Ahold Delhaize (examples, not meant to be exhaustive):
- All ins and outs of Ahold Delhaize's strategy and specifically the priority on Healthy Communities & Planet, including topics such as health, climate, circularity and nature.
- Feeling for Health & Sustainability dynamics in the global (food) retail sector and its value chain.
- Project coordination skills.
- Verbal & written communication skills within a large professional organization.
This is what we offer you.
- An interesting and versatile internship at the Ahold Delhaize headquarters for 5/6 months.
- An internship with a lot of responsibility, where you really gain work experience.
- An internship allowance (€500,- every four weeks based on 40 hours per week) plus travel expenses.
- Events with other interns at our head office.
- An inclusive environment in which you can continue to develop personally and professionally.
You bring this with you.
With our 402,000 colleagues worldwide, we work every day to inspiring everyone to eat and live better, for a healthier future for people and planet. You can be a great addition to our team if you want to contribute to this purpose and bring your enthusiasm and energy to Ahold Delhaize and if you meet these criteria:
You are enrolled in a relevant Master’s degree with a demonstrable focus on sustainability, environmental studies, business, economics, sustainable finance and/or innovation (please note that you need to be registered in a Dutch university for the entire duration of the internship).
You speak and write in English at a native or near-native level. For example, you’ll be expected to draft articles for internal web pages or texts in presentation slide decks with limited supervision.
You have excellent Microsoft Office skills (especially PowerPoint and Excel).
You have the ability to independently (or with little support) coordinate a project.
You must be based in The Netherlands and able to work from our head office in Zaandam at least 2-3 working days per week.
You are available to start September 2025 for at least five months.

In addition, you:
- Demonstrate versatility and flexibility: willing and able to use different skills depending on the task at hand.
- Have a passion for sustainability and demonstrated interest in driving societal impact.
- Recognize yourselves in our values.
- Have a hands-on mentality.
- Have strong communication skills associated with working in an international environment & multi-cultural team and networks.
- Are eager to learn.
- Work efficiently with strong prioritization and time management skills.
- Are structured & organized.
- Are analytical.
Growing together.
As the Health & Sustainability team we have a clear mission: to ensure people – our brands’ customers, colleagues and communities – make healthier and more sustainable choices, and live on the planet in a healthier, more sustainable way. The teams across our family of brands innovate continuously to make products more nutritious and sustainable. We constantly ask ourselves which goals we want to achieve, and how best – and quickly – we can achieve them. Our diverse, passionate team is a perfect combination of strategic professionals and sustainability experts – who can tell you anything and everything about carbon emissions, healthy and sustainable diets, plastic product packaging, how we can reduce food waste, and pretty much every topic in this field.
