How you can
make a difference

The main objective of the Circularity Manager role is to stimulate and inspire circularity across material aspects for Ahold Delhaize and its family of local brands. Circularity is a ‘farm to fork’ opportunity, and as such requires a value chain perspective as we look to drive circular impact upstream of, downstream of, and within our business operations. This role will focus on a variety of circularity topics. For example (not exclusive):

  • Packaging: Reducing plastic packaging, inclusion of recycled content, designing for recyclability, communicating recycling steps, and re-use/-fill models

  • Unsold food: Reducing on farm food loss, reducing food shrink, increase donations of unsold food, high valorization of food waste, and eliminating incineration and landfill of food waste

  • Not for resale: Recyclability of hardware and building materials instore and in offices

About Ahold Delhaize
We’re Ahold Delhaize, one of the world’s largest food retail groups and a leader in both supermarkets and e-commerce. Together with our 18 strong local retail brands in the United States, Europe and Indonesia, we make a meaningful difference in the lives of our brands’ customers, our people and the world around us. We offer a highly dynamic, international working environment in which our associates thrive.

At Ahold Delhaize, we have a clear mission: to ensure people – our brands’ customers, associates, and communities – make healthier and more sustainable choices, and live on the planet in a healthier, more sustainable way. Our Global Support Office (GSO) Health & Sustainability Team is passionate about driving systemic change and maximizing impact, and aims to achieve this by connecting brands, leveraging knowledge and embracing innovation. The teams across our family of brands innovate continuously to make products more nutritious and sustainable. We constantly ask ourselves which goals we want to achieve, and how best – and quickly – we can achieve them. Our diverse, passionate team is a strong combination of strategic professionals and sustainability experts – who can tell you anything and everything about carbon emissions, healthy and sustainable diets, plastic product packaging, how we can reduce food waste, and pretty much every topic in this field.

Your new work environment

The Climate & Environment sub-team consists of 6 FTE’s (inc. lead) and are responsible for three key areas of our Healthier Planet strategy including 1) our ambitions to drive the decarbonization of our own operations and our supply chain, 2) the transition to an inclusive and regenerative food system supporting nature & biodiversity, and 3) to rethink how we package the goods that we sell promoting circular methodologies and reduction of food waste. This team will be key in achieving Ahold Delhaize’s net zero, health, deforestation-free, plastics reduction, and food waste reduction commitments. Your role will be to support our brands to deliver on our circularity ambitions in the context of packaging and food waste, working in collaboration with our cross-functional Global Support Office (GSO) and regional/brand level colleagues. You will report into the GSO VP Climate and Environment.

Key responsibilities of your role

  • Develop an approach to accelerate Ahold Delhaize’s contributions towards a circular economy across the value chain, including potentially our own supporting operations (not for resale)

  • Develop and maintain strong expertise in food waste reduction and its relation to food retail and ecommerce, including building relationships with relevant NGOs in this field (e.g. World Resources Institute 10x20x30 Initiative, Champions 12.3)

  • Develop and maintain strong expertise in packaging reduction and its relation to food retail and ecommerce, including building relationships with relevant NGOs in this field (e.g. Ellen MacArther Foundation and New Plastics Economy Global Commitment)

  • Manage the Ahold Delhaize global ambition to drive food and plastic/packaging waste out of the food system - circularity

  • Respond to the increasing requirements on food waste and plastic packaging from multiple internal and external stakeholders, translating implications for a wide range of business stakeholders within the global function, regions and brands

  • Lead multifunctional, group-wide projects, particularly where a degree of co-ordination between and across multiple group businesses is required such as in respect to efficiency, effectiveness, or economies of scale

  • Advise GSO and/or regional functions to ensure that internal levers for change are recognized and prioritized and reporting of data is efficient, effective, and proactively drives progress against our targets

What’s in it for you?

Aside from what we ask of you in this role, we also have a great deal to offer you: plenty of growth opportunities and various cross-brand career options; flexible working hours; a hybrid working model (we ask you to spend at least 50% of your working time at the office on a weekly basis); and the chance to drive meaningful change on a global scale. You can look forward to a good work-life balance, and the chance to work in an inclusive environment that wholeheartedly encourages growth and welcomes you just the way you are.

  • A gross annual salary (including holiday allowance) of €75.000,- to €80.000,- based on full-time employment
